5 Tips For New Real Estate Agents

5 Tips For New Real Estate Agents

"Every successful agent was a rookie at some point."

This phrase has been my mantra throughout the first 15 months of my real estate career. I never thought I would need a mantra in my professional life, but once I looked up the definition again (and read about how people use those things), a mantra turned to be a great option...

Because the one thing a new agent should never consider as an option is quitting.

Here are 5 tips for new real estate agents who have the courage to keep striving towards success:

  1. Look for opportunities wherever you are. I can't tell you how many times I've heard agents talking about getting a contract out of conversation at a hair salon, or at the gas pump. You're an agent, and you ARE the business you are trying to sell. Be ready at all times to bring up what you do professionally, and how well you can do it.

  2. Learn from other agents around you. Most of the useful knowledge acquired in this industry will come from experience. If you don't have the experience, you can benefit immensely from listening to the people who do. And since people tend to talk about what goes wrong the most, you can learn to avoid common mistakes.

  3. Always emphasize customer and client service. It's a scientific fact that people don't always remember the things you did, but they do always remember the way you made them feel. Providing a memorable experience for your customers and clients will lead to ongoing referrals and continuous business. This will be your defining characteristic throughout your career.

  4. Be ready to adjust your life and get organized.  Real Estate is a different kind of business. You never know when you'll have a home inspection to attend, or a closing that gets pushed forward or backward. To have the flexibility needed in this industry, your personal life and anything outside of real estate dealings needs to be organized and under control.

  5. Understand that failure is a part of building success. Michael Jordan failed the first tryout for his high school basketball team. The founder of Macy's went bankrupt 5 times before he figured out how to build a successful business. You may fail hundreds, or thousands, of times before you get traction in your real estate career. Just don't give up. Ever.
